STITCH REMIXED: MIA MARQUEZ

Our Stitch Remixed campaign focuses on repurposing existing True Religion materials to create something that feels both nostalgic and modern. To help us tell that story, we partnered with two creatives we felt embodied the essence of circularity and DIY culture. Not only did Devin Mercadel and Mia Marquez star in our shoot, they found time to chat with us about their personal experiences with DIY, personal goals, and their most favorite fit from the upcoming drop. Here's a look at what Mia had to say.

Tell us about your experience with DIY culture.

I’ve always been a creative and into DIY activities since I was little. A couple years ago I came across a jacket I had thrifted that I wanted to crop, I had the remaining fabric left over and thought it would be able to work as a top to make a two piece set. I wasn’t even aware of what upcycling was then but in that moment I knew I had wanted to take it to the next level.

How did you get started with sewing?

It wasn’t until about 2 years later after discovering upcycling that I had the time to buy a sewing machine and just start doing it. This all happened around Covid lockdown so it was just me, my sewing machine, YouTube videos, and a lot of practice throughout that time.

How can people get the most out of their denim? How do you take care of your denim?

Quality over quantity always. I think it’s important, and worth it to invest in good timeless pieces that will last you a lifetime.

Other than yourself, who do you feel is killin' it in the DIY game and why?

I come across so many talented artists everyday it’s insane. One of my favorite upcyclers is Anna Molinari, she turns literal trash into art/ clothes. Sustainability in fashion is so important to me so I’m amazed by those who can turn what others would see as “waste” into something new and wearable.

Tell us about your most memorable project to date.

If I could I would pick them all but I’d have to go with my 3 piece sets that really started it all for me. This was the first project that was my original design and not only did I love it but so did everyone else. That’s when I really fell into love with upcycling and discovered my own personal style in my work.

What was your favorite look from the Stitch Remixed shoot? Why?

I’d have to go with the denim band skirt and top. I love the overall look and the idea of using scraps to create a whole new look.

Let's talk about goals. What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I’ve always literally been a DIY person. Ever since I started sewing It’s always been me doing everything from sourcing, marketing, modeling my own pieces, and everything else. This year I really want to grow my brand, I have hundreds of ideas running through my head that I haven’t been able to bring to life yet. So for this year I hope to be able to do that with some help.

There's more to Mia than meets the eye—and trust us, you're going to want to keep your eye on this girl.
