STITCH REMIXED: DEVIN Mercadel

Our Stitch Remixed campaign focuses on repurposing existing True Religion materials to create something that feels both nostalgic and modern. To help us tell that story, we partnered with two creatives we felt embodied the essence of circularity and DIY culture. Not only did Devin Mercadel and Mia Marquez star in our shoot, they found time to chat with us about their personal experiences with DIY, personal goals, and their most favorite fit from the upcoming drop. Here's a look at what Devin had to say.

Tell us about your experience with DIY culture.

Definitely something that I learned as a kid to pretty much, you know, reuse, recycle things that I had. A lot of opportunities to purchase certain stuff that maybe I couldn't afford at the time. You know, I wanted to find other ways to really grow and build and create that way.

Also, a lot of close friends put me on to opportunities. Based off the creative people I'm around is definitely something that I feel like the world is prepared for at a larger scale, which is cool. So pretty much just a trial and error and being able to try new things and not be afraid to just take the leap.

Why is it important for people to up-cycle clothing?

Man, you know, there's a lot happening in this world. We need to save as much as we can—utilize the materials that we have. And just remember, we’re all on this planet spinning in this space, so there's no reason to try to add more to it all the time.

But it’s really dope because I feel like a lot of these pieces have stories. Like I can only imagine where these patches came from [TR Circularity Pants Reference], what these patches have seen. It’s a thing of respecting the past and knowing where you’re going in the future.

What tips do you have for people who want to learn how to mend clothing/up-cycle?

No fear. I would say have no fear. Definitely try it. There's a lot of things that I thought that wasn't going to work, did work. A lot of things that I felt that might have been a challenge at first.I try not to overthink things. So I would just say have no fear and try not to overthink things with these projects. It’s art. It’s subjective. But also remembering that, with the respect of our fabrics and companies and people that have made these fabrics, definitely want to take a little bit more consideration in just taking that leap because they did. So why have fear?

Other than yourself, who do you feel is killin' it in the DIY game and why?

I would have to say this next generation is going crazy right now in the DIY game! There isn’t a day that passes I'm not impressed by whats created. Not only creating these pieces but explaining it at a level others are inspired to take action themselves. I feel when curiosity meets tech and ambition there are Endless Possibilities.

What was your favorite look from the Stitch Remixed shoot?

Mane, favorite look will have to be the denim varsity top and bottom with number patches. When I found out they were from a previous collection it for sure took the top spot. Although the sweatpants/denim piece was a wild card and the look ended up doing numbers. And all of them were 1 of 1’s? Yup. They all stood out to me.

What do you hope to accomplish this year?

This year is about taking the creation to the next level and going outside of the medium as well. There are a few pieces in the vault that are ready to be shared and there is no time like now. Visual and Audio included. When I think about where I plan to go; I'm still aware of the past and where it all started. I foresee myself being on new soil and locked in. Time to let the hair grow with no clean cuts for a min lol. Looking forward to sharing with y’all.

Let's talk about goals. What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I’ve always literally been a DIY person. Ever since I started sewing It’s always been me doing everything from sourcing, marketing, modeling my own pieces, and everything else. This year I really want to grow my brand, I have hundreds of ideas running through my head that I haven’t been able to bring to life yet. So for this year I hope to be able to do that with some help.
